Philharmonia Orchestra 2008/09

This season the Philharmonia Orchestra celebrates Esa-Pekka Salonen's first season as Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor. Having already opened the season here at Southbank Centre with a gala performance of Stravinsky's extraordinary neo-classical opera-oratorio Oedipus rex in September the Philharmonia's Spring-Summer 2009 season sees the Orchestra launch Salonen's first major project, a six-month exploration of the music and culture of Vienna - City of Dreams: Vienna 1900-1935. Fin-de-siecle Vienna was a unique and exhilarating cultural melting pot and this series aims to present the music of Mahler and his contemporaries in its historical and social context, as well as the art, craft, design, architecture, literature, philosophy and science of the period. Other highlights include three concerts under Sir Charles Mackerras to open the season; a special series with Lorin Maazel to mark the 50th Anniversary of his first concerts with the Orchestra; concerts with Christoph von Dohnanyi in his new role as Honorary Conductor for Life and anniversary tributes to Haydn and Mendelssohn under Andras Schiff. The season also brings the welcome return of artists including Gustavo Dudamel, Sir James Galway, Viktoria Mullova, Maria João Pires, Vadim Repin, Christian Tetzlaff and Mitsuko Uchida.
Southbank Centre Members have priority booking for the second half of the Orchestra’s season. Members booking opens 17 October. General booking opens 20 October.
