The year 1806 saw the completion of some of Beethoven's sunniest and most lyrical music, including the Fourth Symphony,
the Violin Concerto and the Fourth Piano Concerto. Beethoven himself took the solo part in the work's premiere of the
G major concerto, which is distinguished by its quietly understated opening (for the soloist) and its unique and extraordinary
slow movement.
When Prokofiev turned to the subject of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in 1934 he and his collaborators
actually considered giving the ballet a happy ending, with Romeo arriving in time to find Juliet alive. The electrifying score
remains one of Prokofiev's most celebrated compositions and the suite performed in this programme is Charles Dutoit's
special arrangement of numbers from the ballet. It begins with the dramatic sweep of the ever-popular Montagues and Capulets
and culminates in the shattering intensity of the scene at Juliet's tomb.
