Rick Haythornthwaite (Chairman)
Rick Haythornthwaite is partner of Star Capital Partners.
Rick has a wealth of experience in the arts and cultural sectors and has been Chair of the Board of the Almeida Theatre since 2001, Chair of the Corporate Advisory Group at Tate since 2004 and a board member of the British Council since 2003. He has also been a trustee of the UK National Museum of Science and Industry, Chair of the British American Arts Association and a trustee of the Whitechapel Art Gallery.
Prior to his current role at Star Capital Partners, he was CEO of Invensys from 2001 to 2005, responsible for leading the rescue of the company. From 1999 to 2001 he was Group Chief Executive of Blue Circle Industries, successfully defending against a hostile takeover bid and delivering an ambitious growth programme; Chief Executive, Europe and Asia of Blue Circle Industries from 1997 to 1999, undertaking a major restructuring in the UK; and from 1995 to 1997 Director of Corporate and Commercial at Premier Oil. He joined British Petroleum in 1978 and was there for 17 years, becoming the President of BP Venezuela from 1993 to 1995.
Current non-executive positions include Chairman of the Board of Mastercard Inc and Chairman of the Risk and Regulation Advisory Council.
He begins his role as Chairman of Southbank Centre Board with immediate effect.
Rick was born in 1956, and educated at The Queen’s College, Oxford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is married with two children.
Mr Edward I. Walker-Arnott (Vice-Chairman)
Senior Partner with Herbert Smith, he sat on the Departmental Enquiry into insolvency law which resulted in the enactment of the Insolvency Act. He has served as one of the first three nominated members of the Council of Lloyds, and chaired the Investigations Committee at Lloyd's.
He is well known in the City having been involved in many high-profile cases including a number of celebrated take-over battles. Apart from his reputation as a company lawyer, he has unusually wide experience as a commercial lawyer. In June 1997 he conducted for the Arts Council of England an independent review of the Arts Council's relations with the Royal Opera House.
Mr Mark Ball
Established Fierce Earth Ltd in 1997, which specialises in the production and presentation of cultural events, festivals and programmes. He established and produces Fierce!, an annual international festival of theatre, live art and dance taking place across the West Midlands and widely recognised as one of the UK’s most vibrant contemporary arts festivals. In 2005 he was named the Institute of Directors’ Young Director of the Year for his work with the company.
Appointed a Clore Fellow in 2006/07, Mark also holds posts at a number of arts organisations, including Founding Member and Director of Creative Republic, Member of Events and Festivals Theme Group, Advantage West Midlands, Founder Member of Live Art UK, and he is a Board member of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In January 2008 he was appointed Head of Events and Exhibitions at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Dame Vivien Duffield
Dame Vivien Duffield is the Chairman of the Clore Foundation and created her own Foundation in 1987. The two Foundations were merged in 2000 to become the Clore Duffield Foundation. She is also Chairman of the Clore Foundation in Israel. Since 1998, the Clore Duffield Foundation has donated and pledged in excess of £10 million to museum and gallery education.
Dame Vivien's charitable work has been formally acknowledged by many institutions, both in the UK and in Israel. She was awarded the CBE in 1989, the DBE in 2000, and the Mont Blanc Arts Patronage Award in 2001. She is an Honorary Fellow of the City of Jerusalem, an Honorary Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall (Oxford University) and of King's College London and is an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Music. Dame Vivien is also Deputy Chair of the Board of the Weizmann Intitute of Science and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Imperial College London.
Dame Vivien is closely associated with a number of charities. She became a Director of Southbank Centre board in 2002, is currently Chairman of the Royal Opera House Endowment Fund, is on the Board of the World Monuments Fund in Britain and is a Governor of the Royal Ballet. In 2007 she was appointed Chair of the new fundraising initiative for Oxford University.
Susan Gilchrist
Susan Gilchrist has worked for the corporate communications company, Brunswick Group for more than a decade and is Senior Partner, UK. She is responsible for driving revenues and developing the business client base in London. Susan also sits on the Executive Committee Board, which runs the company globally. Before joining the company, Susan was a journalist specialising in business.
Mr Michael Hamlyn
An award winning film producer, who in 1991 set up Specific Films Ltd. Credits include The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and U2's Rattle & Hum. He is a trustee of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, a major supporter of Southbank Centre's Learning & Participation programme, and of the National Film School. He has served as President of the Music Video Producers Association while living in the U.S.
Brent Hansen
After an illustrious career at MTV Networks International, Brent Hansen retired in 2006. He joined the embryonic MTV Europe in 1987 as News Producer and, after several promotions, became President and Chief Executive of MTV Networks Europe in 1996. He became the President, Creative and Editor In Chief of MTV Networks International in 2003, responsible for overseeing Creative and Editorial for all 89 international channels, as well as branding, creative, music, programming and editorial output.
Ms Fionnuala Hogan
Is a Senior Director of Hypo Real Estate Bank, focused on commercial real estate lending for Europe, the Middle East and India. Previously she has worked with Dresdner Kleinwort Benson, KPMG, Xelector plc and Hay Management Consultants.
Fionnuala is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. She holds an MA in Music and Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin and her interests in the arts and arts education extend across music, dance, literature and theatre.
David Kershaw
David Kershaw set up M&C Saatchi together with Maurice and Charles Saatchi, Bill Muirhead and Jeremy Sinclair David in 1995 and he has been the Group CEO for 18 years. Before that, he had worked at Saatchi & Saatchi UK for more than 20 years and became its Chairman and CEO in 1994. M&C Saatchi is the third largest advertising agency in the UK. He was Director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1988 to 1992 and he is currently Chairman of the Cultural Leadership Programme and a Trustee of Creative and Cultural Skills.
Martin Myers
Chairman of Mountgrange Capital plc, an investment company, having resigned in November 2000 from his position as Executive Deputy Chairman of Trillium, a company of which he co-founded in 1997, subsequent to its sale to Land Securities PLC at which time Martin became a Special Advisor to the Board of Land Securities.
Martin has extensive experience of property investment and development. Having obtained a degree in Estate Management from London University, he joined Jones Lang Wootton in 1964. Eight years later he became an Equity Partner. In 1983 he retired from the Partnership to form Arbuthnot Properties Limited. In 1987 the company reversed into Imry Property Holdings PLC to become Imry International PLC which subsequently acquired City Merchant Developers PLC in 1988 to become Imry Merchant Developers PLC before being sold to a private consortium in 1989.
In 1991 Vines Management Limited, a company in which Martin was the major shareholder was established and subsequently bought Imry back from the private consortium. The assets of Imry were all sold by 1997.
Ursula Owen
Editor and Chief Executive of Index on Censorship, having previously worked as Director of the Paul Hamlyn Fund for Culture and the Arts, and as co-founder, Editorial and Managing Director of Virago Press. She has also served as a Director of the New Statesman and of New Society, and as a member of the Literature Advisory Panel of the Arts Council of England.
Robin Woodhead
Robin Woodhead, Chief Executive of Sotheby's Europe and Asia and Executive Vice President of Sotheby's Holdings, has been appointed a member of the South Bank Board. He is already a member of the Transforming the South Bank Campaign Committee.
Robin Woodhead's interests in the arts extend across ballet, music and the visual arts. He has served as Chairman of Rambert Dance Company and of Music Research Institute. He was Founding Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery Foundation and Treasurer of the Contemporary Art Society.
Before joining Sotheby's in 1998 he was Chief Executive of the London Commodity Exchange, having previously been Chairman and Chief Executive of National Investment Group plc and Chairman of International Petroleum Exchange Ltd.
Baroness Young of Hornsey
Consultant in the cultural sector. Prior to that she was Professor of Cultural Studies at Middlesex University. She has worked as an actor, and advised the Arts Council and the BBC on cultural diversity issues. She has served on the boards of the Royal National Theatre and Resource, the Council of Museums, Archives and Libraries. She was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List.
